Artists and creatives of all concentrations and media are often faced with the question, ‘ why do what you do?’ ‘Why do graphic design?’ Is one I have heard too many times! The answer can be hard for some people to understand, if they don’t fully know what graphic designers can do, or what their purpose is. Since there are so many different and diverse avenues a designer can go into, I believe that a lot of people simply aren’t even aware of them. Everyone’s answer is different, but mine is pretty straightforward. Let me show you my very first logo design, and explain why I do graphic design!
‘Naked Bagel’ Logo Contest
Right after I graduated from Delaware Valley High School, a bagel shop in my hometown of Milford held a logo contest. Finding a brand image by putting out a contest to the public is a great way to get an inexpensive logo; and great for submitting artists because it was a way to start my design portfolio and get myself out there!
The image above is the original ink illustration I came up with. Just leaving school and prior to going to college, I didn’t have any access to software so I went with the pen and ink route. I wanted to make it straightforward and incorporate a lighthearted and funny character for the shop. Luckily enough my entry was chosen! The logo is currently professionally displayed in store and worn by workers on shirts and hats. Merchandise with the logo is also sold to the public. As a part of the trade off, I get a free bagel whenever I visit the store!
It is such a privilege to see people wearing, enjoying, or using something you designed.
This is what truly interests me the most about Graphic Design. In this specific field of logo design, I’m able to create something unique and personalized to a one of a kind small business, and watch them flourish.
The best part is seeing someone who isn’t a worker at the bagel shop is spotting a member of the public wearing it; because they had to go out of their way to purchase it. In Graphic Design, you’re able to work one on one with all kinds of people and use your own skills to help their business change and grow. It is always something new, very rewarding, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else!
